Stool ova and parasites (O&P)

What this test is

This stool test looks for parasites and their eggs. These can cause ongoing diarrhea or other gut symptoms. It makes the most sense in a few situations. These include travel somewhere with a higher risk of parasites, or recent immigration. It also makes sense with close contact with young children in daycare. Drinking untreated well water, or having ongoing diarrhea, are other good reasons. One thing to know: parasites do not always show up in a single stool sample. If we are still concerned after one negative test, we may ask for one or two more samples. This test is usually not needed if you have no symptoms or reason to suspect exposure.
