MTHFR gene test

Full name: MTHFR gene testing (C677T / A1298C genotype)

This test doesn't have a proven medical use for the reasons people usually ask about it.

What this test is

MTHFR is a gene that helps your body use folate, a B vitamin. Small changes in this gene are very common, and many healthy people have them. For years, some thought these changes caused problems like blood clots, pregnancy loss, or tiredness, by raising a substance called homocysteine. Careful research has not backed this up. Having the gene change does not reliably predict these problems, and genetics experts now advise against testing for it. If you're worried about homocysteine or folate, it's better to check those directly. If blood clots or pregnancy loss are a concern, there are proven tests that don't use MTHFR. Many people learn about this gene from a home DNA test. That result alone doesn't need to change your care.
