Melatonin (saliva or urine)

This test doesn't have a proven medical use for the reasons people usually ask about it.

What this test is

Melatonin is the hormone that helps set your sleep clock. Some clinics test it in saliva or urine. This is meant to check sleep or 'adrenal' problems. Melatonin levels change a lot with light and with sample timing. There is no normal result that tells your doctor what to do next. One special use belongs to sleep research clinics, not routine care. If sleep is the real problem, other tools help more. These include a sleep history, a sleep diary, or a referral to a sleep doctor.
