What this test is

Galectin-3 is a newer blood test linked to scarring in the heart. It has mostly been studied in people who already have heart failure. Researchers wanted to see if it predicts how those patients will do over time. Even there, evidence does not support using it alone to judge outlook. Galectin-3 has not been shown to help screen for heart problems in someone without a diagnosis. If you have symptoms like breathlessness, tiredness, or swelling, that is worth taking seriously. The better first step is a clinical check and, if needed, other tests your doctor can order. Galectin-3 is not one of them right now.
