Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

This test is rarely useful for the reasons people usually ask about it.

What this test is

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is a substance your cells use to make energy. Some clinics offer a blood test to check your CoQ10 level, often for muscle aches from a cholesterol medicine called a statin. Statins do lower CoQ10 in the blood. Studies disagree on whether a CoQ10 supplement eases statin muscle aches. But there is no proven way to use a blood test to decide who needs it. If you try one, you do not need a blood test first. CoQ10 testing does matter in one rare situation. A genetic condition causes very low CoQ10 from birth or childhood, causing serious muscle and nerve problems. Specialists diagnose that. For everyday fatigue or muscle aches, this blood test does not usually change your care.
