Stool analysis / microbiome test
Full name: Comprehensive digestive stool analysis / microbiome profile
This test doesn't have a proven medical use for the reasons people usually ask about it.
What this test is
This is a detailed stool test. It looks at the bacteria and yeast in your gut. It is sometimes sold under a brand name. It is marketed to check for 'gut imbalance,' also called dysbiosis. In 2024, a large group of gut specialists reviewed these tests. They found no agreement on how to regulate them. They also found no proof that the tests change your care. There is no known 'normal' pattern to compare your result to. Acting on the report can lead to costly supplements or diets. You may not need them. If you have ongoing gut symptoms, there are better first steps. These include checking for celiac disease, infection, or inflammation, depending on your symptoms.
