What this test is

CA-125 is a blood test. Some people call it the ovarian cancer marker. It works best when you already have a lump near your ovaries. Doctors check it along with an ultrasound. This helps decide if you need to see a specialist. It is not a good test for healthy women with no symptoms. Many things besides cancer can raise CA-125. These include endometriosis, fibroids, or even a normal period. In early ovarian cancer, the level is often normal too. Big studies show that screening healthy women does not save lives. It can lead to surgery after a false alarm. If ovarian cancer runs in your family, ask about genetic testing instead.
